Summary

Based in Dublin, our Client has been providing general insurance products for approximately 15 years, specializing in delegated authority business, supplying tailored innovative insurance solutions to brokers and their customers. Our Client has recently entered into a new exciting growth phase: this small and friendly team have big ambitions to grow their Irish and UK insurance portfolio, working closely with key partnerships to build long-term profitable businesses.

The Head of Actuarial Function will play a crucial part of the senior executive team of the Company. This is a PCF role, responsible for the actuarial function and for the tasks carried out by that function under Solvency II and the requirements of the Domestic Actuarial Regime.
This principle objective will be to develop and deliver the Client’s actuarial and reserving strategy for a range of general insurance products. The successful candidate will need to build strong working relationships, provide specialist and strategic actuarial advice, as well as fulfilling the actuarial reporting requirements of Solvency II, and the CBI.
Lead the actuarial pricing function, coordinating with underwriting and claims to ensure robust pricing models are developed and maintained. Where necessary, manage outsource providers who provide specialist reserving and/or pricing capability to support the actuarial function.

Key Responsibilities:

The successful candidate will:

  • Fulfil all CBI requirements pertaining to this PCF role.
  • Calculate technical provisions under Solvency II regulations.
  • Produce detailed and robust reserving reports to the Board.
  • Provide commentary and opinion on underwriting policies.
  • Contribute to the effective implementation of the risk management system including the ORSA process.
  • Provide detailed actuarial expertise to colleagues, both internally and externally.
  • To assist in the technical analysis and quantification of risks and evaluate the current financial implications of future contingent events.
  • Provide quarterly Ultimate Loss Ratio predictions for all product portfolios.
  • Build and maintain internal and external relationships to deliver both current and future business needs.
  • Work with Underwriting Director and Underwriting Managers to quantify (and verify) impact of Underwriting Plans on future ULRs.
  • Provide analysis and recommendations to support work with reinsurance partners.
  • Recommend, design, and continuously improve pricing models.
  • Conduct scenario planning and impact assessments of any suggested pricing changes.
  • Lead the actuarial pricing function and chair internal pricing committees, whilst attending and providing input to the pricing committees of the distributed products.
  • Create and manage a strict pricing change control process.
  • As required, build and develop a highly motivated and talented actuarial team.
  • If required, deliver projects or initiatives as required by the CEO and/or the external pricing teams.
  • Solvency II – Continuous monitoring, and contribution towards Solvency reporting.
  • Ensure compliance with corporate, statutory and regulatory requirements within the actuarial area, including providing regulatory reporting updates to the ORSA and CBI.
  • Keeping up to date of any regulatory changes and their potential impact.

The Person:

DESIRABLE EXPERIENCE and SKILLS:

  • Qualified actuary with min. 10 years in the general insurance industry
  • Recent experience of general insurance reserving in the UK and/or Ireland (preferred)
  • A member of a recognised actuarial association
  • Meets the minimum CBI competencies for the Head of Actuarial Function
  • Experience of reporting to the Board
  • Highly numerate and analytical
  • Good problem-solving ability
  • Attention to detail
  • A detailed knowledge of Solvency II regulations
  • Good written and verbal communication skills
  • Experience of building effective business relationships
  • Experience of operating at a strategic level
  • Commercial awareness
  • Proven knowledge and experience of actuarial pricing methodologies, is advantageous but not essential
